On February 1, 2025, the Government of Yukon’s Department of Environment approved the Yukon Stewardship Plan for Packaging, Paper and Single-Use Products, which was submitted by Circular Materials on September 24, 2024. This marks a significant milestone for the Yukon’s transition to full extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging and paper products, set to launch on November 1, 2025. As Circular Materials prepares for the transition to EPR in the Yukon, we look forward to delivering a program that enhances the recycling system across the territory and increases the recovery of materials.

Leveraging our experience and expertise as a national not-for-profit producer responsibility organization (PRO) for packaging and paper products (PPP), Circular Materials developed the Stewardship Plan following engagement with producers, partners and stakeholders in the Yukon.

“Circular Materials is committed to delivering a seamless and successful transition to EPR that delivers results and improves recycling rates across the territory,” says Allen Langdon, CEO of Circular Materials. “We welcome the approval of the Stewardship Plan and look forward to continued collaboration with the Yukon government, producers, communities and residents to advance recycling and the circular economy and make a positive and lasting impact for people and the environment.”

Looking ahead, Circular Materials will continue engaging and collaborating with communities and service providers to prepare for successful program implementation. This includes understanding communities’ current recycling services and promotion and education initiatives.

The Yukon’s Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation first came into effect on January 25, 2024, with the goal of implementing EPR in the Yukon by 2025. Circular Materials is finalizing the approach for program implementation with the Government of Yukon. Once finalized, the stewardship plan and other program details will be posted on the Circular Materials website.
